The community story that inspired More Than an Asset

In early November 2019, I spent a lovely afternoon with Julia Rodgers Clark and Drick Rodgers, a father-daughter farming duo, on their family farm outside of Rolling Fork in Sharkey County, Mississippi. I loved on horses, rode in a cotton picker, peeked into Mont Helena, and listened to remarkable family stories and histories.

When I asked Drick and Julia what words came to mind when they consider their farm, “home” was the clear winner. Drick also mentioned that their place is so much more than an asset to him, and, in true Southern form, later told a story that illustrated, for me, what he meant.

Years back, Drick dotted a few fields with prairie strips to serve as bird habitat for duck hunting. Time passes. The birds come. He shoots exactly one duck, hangs up his gun, and says to himself “that’s not why I did this.” Instead, the strips act as tiny wildlife refuges amidst the cotton, corn, and soy fields.
